How to Wash Silk
Silk can be washed by washing machine! You will be amazed to see how strong Silk Cocoon’s silk is. Care instructions are included in each product.
  • We recommend that pure silk garments be dry-cleaned. Dry cleaning of fine silk extends the life of the garment and protects its natural beauty. Strictly follow the washing label within the garments.
  • Silk can also be washed by hand or washing machine in water at a temperature not exceeding 30°C with mild/neutral non- biological detergent.
  • Never use bleach and fabric softener.
  • It is advisable to use a net wash bag and select "Silk" option if marked or delicate cycle on the washing machine.
  • Wash dark colours separately and do not mix with non-delicate garments.
  • Rinse thoroughly, do not tumble dry.
  • Dry flat away from direct heat and strong sunlight.
  • Steaming silk is recommended for removing creases.
  • Iron at the silk setting or temperature at 110oC on reverse side and for best results iron when the garment is about 90% dry.

Why silk is good for your skin?
Silk shares the same 18 proteins (amino acids) found in skin and is known as the second skin. It is scientifically proven that silk as a fabric composed of protein next to your skin can prevent wrinkles and tenderises the skin by touch, friction and moistening. Unlike other natural fibres, which absorb moisture from the skin, silk allows your skin to breath contrary to artificial fibres.

Facts About Silk
  • Silk is a delicate, natural fabric woven from the thread from cocoons. It contains 18 proteins found in human skin and is known as the second skin.
  • Silk stops you getting facial wrinkles! Composed of proteins, it is scientifically proven that silk keeps one’s skin young and tender by moistening, touch, friction and free breathing. Silk pillowcases are renowned for their deep soothing effect on face and hair.
  • Silk is nature’s finest insulator and one of the best natural moisture absorbent, which ‘wicks’ moisture away when one perspires. As a result silk is warm when worn in cool weather and cool in hot weather.
  • Silk is the most ideal fabric for those with sensitive skin.
  • Silk is the softest, lightest and strongest of all natural fibres. Silk is stronger than steel! Sixteen layers of pure silk can stop a bullet.
  • Silk fibres are so supple they can stretch up to 20% of their length without breaking and still spring back to hold their shape, which is why silk garments keep their shape even after years of use.
  • A silk duvet filled with long silk floss is a life long investment for luxury and comfort. Unlike feather duvets, it never knots.
  • Silkworms are fed with handpicked mulberry leaves selected from sustainable mulberry farms. Mulberry trees protect the environment and generate sustainable wealth for farmers.
  • Thousands of cocoons are needed to produce sufficient silk for one dress. Each cocoon is made up of a filament between 600 and 900 metres long! Between five and eight of these super-fine filaments are twisted together to make one thread.
  • Silk can be woven or knitted. There are many types of woven silk such as crepe satin, jacquard and georgette etc. The weight (momme) and quality of silk are the main decisive factors in it’s pricing.
  • Do not confuse Polyester Satin with Silk (Crepe Satin). Polyester satin, whose raw material is oil, is chemically processed and impairs the breathing of your skin, contrary to silk.
  • Silk feels soft and cool while polyester feels stiff. Burning silk fibre has the same smell and texture as burning human hair, whereas polyester threads will just melt with black smoke flame leaving a toxic odour. Do not try at home.
  • Like other natural fibres such as cotton or linen, silk creases easily, unlike polyester, which is crease resistant. It is normal to see some colour run when washing coloured silk, though colour will be retained.
  • Silk can be washed in washing machines. Silk Cocoon attaches caring instructions to each garment.
  • Silk originated in China about 5000 years ago. Legend gives credit to a Chinese Empress Xi Ling-Shi, the wife of the Yellow Emperor, who discovered silk and invented the silk loom in the 28th century BC.
  • In 139 BC the world’s longest trade route was opened stretching from Eastern China to the Mediterranean Sea. By 300 AD the secret of silk production had reached India and Japan.
  • Silk manufacture became popular in Italy during 13th century and other parts of Europe during the 18th – 19th century. However nowadays silk production or processing has nearly disappeared in Europe.
  • China remains far and away the largest silk producer. Italy is the major importer of silk products primarily from China. Other major silk importers are America, Germany and France. India is the largest importer of raw silk from China despite it being the 2nd largest producer of silk.
